Last week, Shanghai American School’s Mu Alpha Theta club hosted the inspiring Professor Po-Shen Loh, a renowned mathematician, Carnegie Mellon professor, and National Coach of the winning USA International Mathematical Olympiad team from 2013–2023. Addressing both students and parents, he explored how artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the world and, more importantly, how humans can thrive in this evolving landscape by focusing on skills that AI can’t replicate.

上周，上海美国学校的Mu Alpha Theta数学社团有幸邀请到了知名数学家、卡内基梅隆大学教授，同时也是在2013至2023年间带领美国队在国际数学奥林匹克竞赛中屡获佳绩的主教练——罗博深教授。罗教授为师生及家长们带来了一场精彩的演讲。他深入探讨了人工智能如何以前所未有的速度重塑着世界，并着重强调了人类应如何凭借那些AI（人工智能）无法复制的特质，在这个日新月异的时代中蓬勃发展。

Professor Loh emphasized that as AI becomes increasingly powerful and affordable, it’s crucial for students to focus on qualities that make them uniquely human. He explained that creating value for others is an essential way to stand out, as AI might solve technical problems but lacks the ability to build meaningful relationships or understand human needs.

罗教授强调，随着AI技术的不断强大与普及，学生们更应聚焦于那些让他们成为独特个体的品质上；并解释道，为他人创造价值是让自己脱颖而出的关键，因为尽管AI能解决技术难题，却难以建立有意义的人际关系或理解人类的真实需求。

He also highlighted the importance of cultivating kindness alongside cleverness, stressing that being "kind and clever" is far more impactful than simply being "smart and arrogant." In addition, he underscored the value of networking and visibility, pointing out that while AI operates in the background, humans who connect, collaborate, and communicate effectively will stand out and create new opportunities.

Students and parents alike left the talk inspired by Professor Loh’s actionable advice. Lucas L., a senior and President of Mu Alpha Theta, shared, “His emphasis on kindness, networking, and visibility will reshape how we run our club. We aspire to embody his spirit by creating a more welcoming and approachable community.”
